Skinny Coach - Tiffany Wright, Ph.D.
Reclaiming Skinny

Skinny is not about a size zero. Skinny is about being in control of what you eat more than what your body looks like.

Skinny is about how your body feels. Skinny is having the ability to be at a healthy weight - looking great is a fabulous side effect.

It is no wonder America is obese.

I lost 100 pounds over a decade ago and have dedicated my life and career to helping women learn how to be free from their eating issues and get their skinny back.

Skinny Mom
elementalyou changed my life. Obviously, losing almost 50 lbs makes a person look great, but I feel great, too. I have more energy and can do more, and that makes me happier, as well. It also helps my family. My kids have a mom who is up for more challenges, I'm so much less tired, so I'm up for one more book, one more activity, one more hike. I'm planning my days better too, as a result of needing to plan my menus, so I've got more momentum every day, and my household is more smoothly run.

I love having shown my kids the process of having a goal, finding a way, sticking to it, and achieving that goal. I love that this goal was not about instant gratification. Even though Eyou helped me to lose my extra pounds fairly quickly for weight loss, it still took some months, so my kids saw me sticking to my plan through everything, over the long term.

As a result of my menu changes, I'm serving better food for them too, and modeling better eating choices. For instance, they see me eating lots of vegetables every day, at both lunch and dinner. When I talk about balance with them, I know that they've seen it in action. Although I thought I was already pretty nutrition-savvy, I also know that I now have better label awareness, having been shocked at just how many products include sugar and processed starches. Who knew that there was starch in almost every chicken broth on the market, or sugar in nearly every mayonnaise and salad dressing? And since I buy the groceries, I know that we're no longer getting those little “extras.”

Finally, now that I'm pregnant, I love knowing that I've had a great start. This pregnancy was a surprise, but I knew I was already eating optimally, even through the early weeks of being unaware of the new little one. Really, between starting at a good weight myself (I was already on maintenance) and eating so well in general, I don't think I could have asked for a better start for this baby—and all thanks to eyou.

Memorial Day BBQ - YUMMY!
Delicious baby back ribs drenched in BBQ sauce

creamy potato salad

HOT DOGS

homemade pie

BBQ baked beans

beer

it is all so wonderful

but deadly for the waistline

The average amount of calories consumed at a outdoor BBQ feast hovers around 3000! and that is if you are eating a normal amount of everything. If you really over do it you could tip 7000 calories in one afternoon.

No one wants to think about gaining weight during the Memorial Day festivities but try to at least keep the damage to a minimum.

Imagine if you had a burger and skipped the bun, cheese, mayo and sauces? You can taste the wonder of a beautifully grilled sirlion burger and
save hundreds of calories. How would you feel Monday night if you declined the mayo drenched coleslaw, potato and macaroni salad. What if you ate lots of sweet watermelon and peaches instead of pie and ice cream?

All celebrations are a challenge when it comes to moderating our eating so if you don't succeed -- Don't fret! Tuesday morning elementalyou will help you achieve your summer dreams. To celebrate Memorial Day I am offering a special so that you can finally lose the weight and get skinny. Next Memorial Day you will be wearing a bikini or a cute little summer dress.

Don't gain another 10 pounds this summer. Be on the look out tomorrow for the answer to your weight loss prayers. If you would like to start the summer with a plan to lose weight, get more energy and boost your mood then stay tuned.

10 Pounds in 1 Month
What one thing:

1) Causes significantly more weight gain than its alternative - even when ingesting the same amount of calories?

2) Causes abnormal increases in body fat - especially in the belly.

3) Causes a rise in circulating blood fats - triglycerides.

4) Is the number one contributor to the dramatic increase in obesity in America

5) Is responsible for an average of 48% more weight gain than those not eating it.

And the answer is:
High Fructose Corn Syrup

In the 40 years since the introduction of
high fructose corn syrup the rate of overweight Americans have gone from 10% to 66%.

Write me and I can tell you how to eliminate
high fructose corn syrup from your diet and your children's diet and lose 10 pounds in one month.

The 30 for 30 Club
I have not been getting enough exercise. I know the Skinny Coach should be keeping up with her exercise but alas - I have not. I keep meaning to start but never got to it. Finally, out of desperation I called to my fellow yahoo group community.
I posted to all my groups the following plea:
"Wanna prevent weight gain? Walk. The data is in and we now know how
long you have to walk in order to prevent the average weight gain of 3-5 pounds a year. 30 minutes a day keeps the fat away.
We all know that we won't lose weight without a good health eating plan but to maintain your weight and, of course, to decrease risks of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and overall vitality - lets walk.
I read about the 30 minutes in 30 days walking challenge on Dr. Oz and Oprah and I decided to do it. If anyone would like to join me email me and I will CC everyone."
The response was unbelivable. So many women were in the same boat that I was so we started a group called the 30 for 30 club and started walking.

"i’m digging the accountability. the company for today was a more spiritual kind"
"Walked for 30 minutes and loved it – blue skies, warm day, nice feeling of accomplishment!"
"Love the accountability part with the community."

It worked, I am walking and so are others. Everyday, 30 minutes for 30 days no matter what.
Wanna join us? You can start your 30 days anytime.

I lost 100 pounds over 12 years ago and it was easy. I was fat my entire life and could not stay on any diet - I tried them all, then I found the solution and have never had a moment of trouble since.

But don’t take my word for it – listen to the
eyou skinny girls:

Kathleen, 85 pounds, over a year, "One of the best things about going
on elementalyou has been the freedom: the freedom from resolutions,
the freedom from striving to be "good" all the time, the freedom to
enjoy my family and friends instead of food."

Wendei, 31 inches, two months. "I am proud of myself beyond words as
I've never been able to stay so consistently committed to any eating
plan."

Allison, 10 pounds, one month. "It is just brilliant, I am on my way
back to myself."

Anonymous, 40 pounds in 3 months. “It is amazing”

Jamie, 11 pounds in her first month. "Lots of parties this weekend (4!!) and so much temptation, but I held on and told the xxx and the xxx that I loved them, but they were like bad boyfriends and would only hurt me in the long run."

Victoria. "I'm now on Day 83 of the elementalyou plan. At this point, I consider it less a plan and more a lifestyle. A better, healthier lifestyle, both on a mental and physical level. While I'm extremely pleased by the weight and inches I've lost to date, I even more thrilled at the freedom I'm experiencing now from these guilty feelings that plagued me for years. I can approach each new day with the knowledge that I don't need to make any changes to how I'm eating, I already have and it's working GREAT! Thanks, Tiffany!"

Tracy, 11.5 pounds the first month. "elementalyou has a super eating plan and it works. I am not hungry, I am eating well and it's yummy. I don't even call it a diet because it isn't. It's a new way of thinking about food."

Diane, 9 pounds and 22 inches in 28 days. “I know I can live with this plan. I have found the elementalyou plan to be easy to follow, it has taken me back to healthy, controlled eating. I love that I am providing delicious healthy food for my family. AND I'm looking forward to this summer and getting into a bikini!"

Kim, 12 pounds in 28 days. "There were many challenges, the holidays, family and work – but nothing could distract me from the path I am on. This is something that I am going to do for myself. I feel good. I would not be able to do any other diet with my lifestyle. elementalyou is so practical and I lost all my cravings, it is just so easy."

Becky. "I am now at the point where the pants I couldn't get into (when I started the diet) are now practically falling off! I love being skinny (Tiffany was right again)!"

Genevieve. "I am still amazed at the difference in my body.  I used to hate shopping for clothes.  I dreaded how I might look in the yucky lights and I never knew my size and of course, my size was going up and up. What was so amazing is that I fit into sizes that I have not seen since high school - and I have been pregnant 3 times since then!"

Take the quiz and once I get the results I will call you for your free 1 hour consultation. I will give you one tip that if you join or not will help you turn your belly fat into a flat belly.

I Lost 17 Pounds and
Almost 30 Inches!
A new decade is on the horizon. And with the New Year coming I am once again thinking about New Year Resolutions. I am thinking about the Resolutions I made in the past. And I am thinking about the ones I made for 2009. Last year after I had more than my share of eggnog, Christmas cookies, and pie, I decided to start the year with a 40 day cleanse. For 40 days I gave up sugar. I also gave up caffeine, dairy, alcohol, and I can't remember what else. But basically it was a very bland and very limiting 40 days. But at the end of those 40 days I felt good. My system was free from the toxins from Christmas past. And I decide to celebrate my accomplishment with a meal of Fried Chicken, golden Waffles (with lots of butter and syrup) and a tall glass of lemonade.

From the moment I took that first sip all my resolutions for the New Year went out of the window. I started to spiral in a sugar induced binge. I couldn't stop eating fast food. And by the time I came up for air I was 20 lbs heavier than I was at Christmas. All my clothes were tight. I was constantly fighting a mental battle over what I would put in my mouth that day. I felt desperate. I was in need of help, and wanted someone to tell me what to do.

With eyou I found exactly what I was looking for. I no longer have to worry about what I'm going to put in my mouth. I have learned what I can eat and what my body cannot process. I have learned that by saying no to sugar I will never have to battle with my mind. My clothes are loose again. My mind is clear and for the first time in a decade I will not be setting a New Year resolution to lose weight. I already am a skinny girl.

Lost 12 Pounds This Month!
When I started elementalyou I was very stiff and sore in the joints. No amount of exercise would make it stop. The joint soreness was attributed to leftover pregnancy hormones. I just kept crossing my fingers that the soreness would go away with time, however, after eight months it was still there and, if anything, was much worse. My clothing didn’t fit at all and I was having to buy continually larger sizes. I had cravings for sweets that were often uncontrollable. I was tired most of the time. Even with a newborn, I just never seemed to feel rested. Although I exercised every day, I just never seemed to feel good about it or good because of it.

I was very strict about planning my meals and calling Tiffany everyday and I reminded myself every day that I have had the sweets and now I am going to be skinny. Now, just 28 days later, I am no longer stiff or sore in my joints. The difference began about 3 days post sugar/flour eating. I no longer have to gather strength to stand up, or walk for a few steps to loosen my joints so that I am comfortable walking. My sprint 8 workouts and weight workouts are so much easier and more effective. I can walk the dog every day without feeling sore and stiff afterwards. My children are grateful that I have more energy.

Skinny Girl Story
Susan lost 8 pounds and over 20 inches her first month - here is her story.

Why did I join elementalyou right before the holiday season? Well, frankly, I was desperate, scared and totally depressed with my situation.

Once upon a time I was thin. I looked good in clothes. I felt good about myself. And then I got pregnant. I had a horrific pregnancy which resulted in a traumatic birth experience all culminating in severe postpartum depression which required medication. To add insult to injury, this medication made me gain weight. When I met Tiffany for the first time, I weighed 15 pounds heavier than after I gave birth and 40 pounds heavier than before I ever got pregnant! How disheartening considering I had tried just about everything; Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, three different food delivery plans, and a trainer. My health was deteriorating rapidly. I was experiencing night sweats, foul body odor and heart palpitations. I was really scared that I was on the path to becoming diabetic. My blood sugar levels were so out of control particularly around the time of period and needless to say my emotional state as well. I would cope by eating sugary carbs which helped momentarily but only worsened the larger situation.

I knew I needed to make big changes but frankly I didn't know how. I even looked into doing an no sugar no flour diet but what foods should I buy? How do I do this? Where is the support? I think this plan is effective because of the constant communication with Tiffany, the support of other women doing the program and having someone provide you a concrete guide of your eating plan. I'm not saying it has been easy. I have had specific challenges like coming off the postpartum medication and going through withdrawal symptoms, not to mention the holidays and my young family that I need to prepare food for. But I need to do this. I want to maintain good health so I can be around for my family and be a good role model for healthy living. I want to feel good in clothes and feel balanced emotionally. Lastly, I want to deal and put to rest the pain of the pregnancy, birth and postpartum depression. I have a wonderful husband, a healthy child and a thriving career. I went through a couple of hard years and in closing that chapter, I am finally ready to let go of the related weight.

I refuse to let that experience define the trajectory of my life. I refuse to accept that I must be fat just because I had a child. It just isn't true. I now can look forward to a rockin body, tight black pants and a small waist line. Those things may sound superficial, but I'll admit it, they matter to me. I can also look forward to good health, and that matters to me even more. In my mind this is the best holiday gift I could give to myself and to my family.

Staying Skinny Over the Holidays
I love Christmas and the holiday season! Every decoration, all the music, and the food – I love the sights and smells of all the holiday goodies. My skinny girls and I do not eat these foods anymore because they trigger overeating and out of control behavior for us. But, not everyone has to give up holiday treats to stay skinny. Here are some tips to keep your skinny.

1. Eat three meals a day. It is especially important to eat breakfast. You might think that you are saving calories but in fact you have over 400% chance of being overweight if you are a breakfast skipper. Eating all your meals will help you from binging on more fattening foods.

2. Eat enough protein, at every meal. Protein will keep you full longer and keep your blood glucose levels stable which will keep your cravings at bay. Some good protein sources are yogurt, chicken, raw walnuts or eggs.

3. Don’t drink your calories. Skip the juice, energy drinks, sports drinks and especially soda. Alcohol is particularly devastating on the waistline. It completely stops the metallization of fat while the alcohol is being processed.

4. I just read about a study that found that eating an apple before breakfast, lunch and dinner resulted in 14 pounds lost in 12 weeks! How easy is that.

5. Get enough sleep. Sleeping at less than 8 hours a day can alter levels of hormones that regulate hunger, causing an increased appetite and a preference for high calorie foods.

6. My favorite tip is to walk around the block every time you put something in your mouth.

Happy Holidays!

5 Skinny Tips for Thanksgiving
Poor Tiffany

People always look at me in dismay when the issue of Thanksgiving comes up. They feel a deep sense of sadness for "Poor Tiffany, you know she doesn't get to eat any pumpkin pie for dessert." Sometimes people who have not known me as long are assured that I must indulge at least once a year for the holidays. I am happy to assure
them that yes, I indulged for the holidays for years. Before elementalyou I had pumpkin pie, pecan pie, spiced nuts, mixed nuts, chunks of cheese.... I had stuffing and gravy and seconds and thirds, I had rolls and cranberry sauce and hot toddy and egg nog. Yes, I know how to indulge. Yes, I have indulged. Yes, I weighed well over 200 pounds.

Now, I don't eat, even one bite of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving day and I am fine. I have had enough pumpkin pie. I have had so much pumpkin pie over the years of my fat life that I can actually remember the taste. I had enough pumpkin pie. Now I have skinny. Now I don't have to unbutton my pants after Thanksgiving dinner. Now, I can go for a walk while everyone else is comatose in front of the TV. Now, I am not too tired to get up the next day. Now I am not upset about how much I ate or disgusted by my failed attempts to only have one serving. Now, I can wake up the next morning for the big shopping day and slip into my skinny jeans and have a quick eyou smoothie and go shopping.

Do I feel sorry for myself? No.

Yes, the stuffing and pie all look and smell yummy, but I just don't eat that anymore and in exchange I get to be skinny. I have had enough pumpkin pie, I am trying skinny now.

I lost 12 pounds in 28 days
Thanksgiving is next week. Do you realize that you could lose 7 pounds by Thanksgiving and 20+ pounds by New Years Eve? Read below to see what the Skinny Girls that joined before Halloween have to say.

Colleen, Susan, and Shawn all took advantage of the Get Skinny for the Holidays BEFORE Halloween and all three of
these Skinny Girls are successfully on the elementalyou plan and are losing lots of weight.

"I just had a profound realization. These last few years I've been walking around with all of this extra weight thinking that this was just going to be my life. Now, for the first time, I feel a glimmer of hope that I will get to feel pretty again and comfortable in my body. Every time I think about this, I crack a small smile. I feel hope for the first time in a long time and it is a beautiful thing."
–Susan

“Whew! just made it past making one of my children's favorite lunches that I can never resist. It was actually really nice not to be plagued with "should I have some?" "How much should I have?" "Just a bite?". It was nice not having to make any decisions.”
–Colleen

“My first month as a skinny girl has been very interesting. When I started the plan 32 days ago I was desperate, a little scared about the possibility of failure again, and FAT. I was not sure at all about what I was getting into. If I would be able to follow Tiffany's rules to lose weight, and meet the challenges that would come with the journey. But the first day came and a new mantra imbedded itself on my brain. I can't have that, and I don't want it. It's like I woke up one morning and everything was clear. I knew how to eat, when to eat, what to eat. I found out I had the tools all along to lose weight, but need the key to get the info from the lock box.
Today is day 32 for me and I am a skinny girl!”
-Shawn (lost 12 pounds her first 28 days)

Will you be on the list of Skinny Girls that joined before Thanksgiving? How much will you lose before New Years Eve?

Now is the time – I am willing to lower my price by half if you are willing to take the jump into your skinny jeans BEFORE the holidays.

Improve Your Memory, Mood and Wellness
Now that we have established that sugar and refined foods are affecting your mood, memory and health – not to mention your waistline, what can you do about it?

You need to eliminate sugar and refined foods. Any product that contains sugar or flour in the ingredients list should not be eaten. There are over 100 names for sugar, email me for the list.

So what should you be eating and what to do when you are craving those nasty refined foods?

1. Eat whole complex carbohydrates to energize your brain and body.
Legumes, nut butters, quinoa, oatmeal, sweet potatoes and brown rice are all good sources of carbohydrates.

2. Eat Breakfast! Eat Breakfast! Eat Breakfast! Nothing will help you lose weight better or stabilize your blood sugar more than a good breakfast. Try the eyou smoothie for a great, healthy breakfast that will sustain you for hours.

Eyou smoothie:
1 cup of non sweetened yogurt
½ cup of pasteurized egg whites
1 cup of frozen fruit
Blend well in a magic bullet and enjoy.

3. We need carbohydrates, but because even complex carbs are eventually digested and absorbed as glucose you also need to eat a good sources of lean protein. Make sure you eat enough protein and some at ever meal.

4. EAT FAT. Eliminate the butter and never, ever, eat margarine. Instead, use olive oil, coconut oil and omega 3’s as your fat. They are all good for you brain, hair, skin and metabolism and help you slow the absorption of sugars from carbs like fruit.

5. Exercise. The endorphin rush associated with exercise will challenge any craving.

6. Drink lots of water.

If you think you can’t live without these foods remember that not only do we not need them, they are actually killing us. These foods are manufactured in a way to make moderation impossible.

If you need help let me know. elementalyou has helped many women lose weight and keep it off, lower their cholesterol, get off diabetes medicine, get pregnant, improve their mood and attitude and get skinny. It is simple and it works, don’t do it alone – let us help you.

Refined Foods are Making You Stupid, Sick and Sleepy
Afternoon slump? Spacing out? Have another cold? It’s the refined foods you are eating. It is not the stress, old age or even lack of sleep. Nothing has a bigger effect on your mood, memory and health than the food you put in your body. The brain and body is a biological engine and it runs on food.

The ups and downs of your blood sugar cause the ups and downs in your mood
(mood SWINGS.) A meal high in sugar or refined foods raises the hormone insulin which raises blood glucose which gives you a shot of energy – but your energy drops just as quickly as it soars -- leaving you feeling irritable, tired and lethargic. Worse yet, our bodies grow a tolerance toward the insulin spike, requiring more of those foods and a need to eat them more often in order to get the same energy boost – this leads women to eat more often to get the same high, which as we said in Fat, Forgetful, Fatigued - FED UP?, causes your body to store fat.

If you can’t seem to remember simple things like you used to or if you have difficulty concentrating or are feeling spacey lately, it is likely the result of your intake of refined foods. This happens because the brain depends on blood sugar for ALL of its energy and the longer that glucose stays in the bloodstream the less fuel the brain has to store memories. This effect gets worse with age and is not reversible.

Your immune system is also compromised by the spike in insulin caused by sugar intake. Some research suggests that the immune system can be compromised by up to 75% when you eat a moderate amount of sugar. Research demonstrates strong links between refined foods and asthma, heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and, of course, diabetes. This is due, in part, to the decreased ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria when you eat sugar. The effect is immediate and last for up to 5 hours.

You should not be eating sugar or refined foods and neither should your children. Scientist are just now discovering just how detrimental these foods are to the human body because the damage has taken years to demonstrate. Refined foods became wildly popular in the 80’s with the widespread use of high fructose corn syrup and in the 80's obesity rates were less than 10% - they are now over 60%. Cancer rate, obesity rate, Alzheimer, diabetes – they have all dramatically increased and the reason can be attributed almost entirely to diet.

Coming next: How to Eliminate Refined Foods and What to Replace Them With.

Five Tips to Make Your Halloween Health(ier)
I am NOT going to tell you all the reasons Halloween is the evil holiday and how it makes children obese, diabetic and crazy. I am not going to talk about how much money we are spending on candy in the name of Halloween (almost 6 billion dollars.) I am not even going to talk about what just one piece of candy corn does to the blood sugar levels of a 6 year old.

Instead, I am going to offer five tips to make your Halloween health(ier)

1. The most important thing you can do is to feed your children a nice, satisfying dinner before you go trick-or-treating. Make sure the meal is high in fiber and protein. We have a nice big bowl of chili with sirloin and black beans.

2. Once you get home have the kids eat a snack and brush their teeth before they dig in – the snack will fill them up and the toothpaste will make candy taste “yucky.”

3. Introduce the children to the Sugar Sprite. She is a little fairy that needs sugar to keep her fairy land alive. My boys leave a big pile of their candy out for the Sugar Sprite and she leaves them a toy as a thank you.

4. Freeze the remanding candy – frozen candy taste great and it significantly slows down how fast you can eat a Snickers.

5. Most importantly,
relax and enjoy this special time with your babies. They like it so much when we loosen up and just have fun – that is a healthy lesson too. Your kids will be fine. More damage is done during the year with packaged foods, juices and refined flour then on October 31st.

Fat, Forgetful, Fatigued – FED UP?
Nothing has more of an impact on your health, mood and brain function than what you put in your mouth. But what is the major culprit for your depression, memory lapses, exhausted afternoons and inability to lose weight? Sugar, of course, and refined foods.

Let me explain why.

Refined foods cause a increase in blood-glucose levels. In
response, the body releases insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin signals the body to allow blood sugar to get into our cells and use it as fuel. If you eat refined foods, the body overreacts and produces too much insulin (remember we have not evolved to handle or eat refined foods, thus the health and condition of our bodies.) The overproduction of insulin drives our blood sugar too low and that causes memory problems, makes you feel like you are dragging and can cause headaches. Of course your body reacts to the low blood sugar and tries to correct by releasing hormones. These hormones raise your blood sugar but also signals your body to STORE FAT -- ESPECIALLY AROUND THE BELLY. For another wonderful ironic twist of fate, it signals you to eat more because even though you just pigged out at lunch, your blood sugar is so low that your body thinks you need more food, so you become very hungry with a cravings for more refined foods. Have you noticed a difference between a nice omelette for breakfast vs. a donut? Or even NO breakfast vs. a bagel? With the donut and bagel you are hungry in two hours. But it gets even more ironic! A diet that causes your blood sugar to spike slows your metabolism down significantly. The effect works out to a difference of about 80 calories a day or 8 pounds a year.

Now you see why you can’t seem to lose that last 10, 20 or 100 pounds! Stay tuned to find out about the effects of refined foods on your memory, immune system and moods.

And in the meantime, don’t gain another pound. Spend this holiday season getting skinny. Call or email me to join The Get Skinny for the Holiday group -- space is limited! Do it right now and be skinny or New Years Eve.

For New Year’s Eve,
What Size is Your Little Black Dress Going to Be?
The season of eating has begun. From Halloween candy corn to New Year’s Eve egg nog, we will have Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah feasts and many parties in between - and that means weight gain. I have the solution at the end of this blog…

Long term studies have shown that we gain a large proportion of our yearly weight gain
over the holiday season, and more importantly that weight is NOT lost during the rest of the year.

Magazine article, after blog entry, after nutritionist tip will tell you:
1) exercise more
2) drink less
3) eat less
4) try these low-calorie, low-fat (yucky) recipes
5) focus on socializing

If anyone could follow these tips they would not be gaining weight over the holidays. If you gained weight last holiday season, if you gained weight during the 2007 holiday season, and the 2006 festivities… you probably can’t exercise more, drink less, eat less and focus on socializing – OR YOU WOULD HAVE.

Last year for elementalyou yearly half off Get Skinny For the Holiday Special - a special group of 7 women started the eyou diet and together they lost over 100 pounds by the New Year (check them out). RIGHT NOW you can be part of the Get Skinny for the Holliday Group --- How much will you lose by New Year’s Day?

Which Little Black Dress will you be wearing New Year's Eve?

This holiday season don't gain weight... AND don't disappoint yourself with another broken New Year's resolution, but actually get control over your eating and turn your belly fat into belly flat! Email me or give me a call (310) 633-1333 – space is limited only 3 Skinny Girl spots left.

Junk Food Rehab
Candy as a Kid Can Lead to Violence as an Adult
Skinny Success: Janelle

Junk Food Rehab
Ernest Noble at UCLA has linked a dopamine receptor that is linked to alcohol, cocaine and nicotine addiction to refined carbohydrates as well. When I was 100 pounds overweight trying every possible diet and failing, I wish I had know that any diet that included refined carbs was guaranteed to fail me and keep me fat. It is like an alcoholic drinking occasionally –
PLEASE! It is well-known that abstinence is the only solution for addiction and guess what – food addiction is no different.

Most are still convinced that fat people lack willpower or that talking about food addiction is removing responsibility. It is not the case. Yes, once we know the solution we have to take responsibility and abstain from the drug of choice. But until recently, this was not an option because the information was not out there, and frankly it still isn’t. There are not many program options for compulsive overeaters. elementalyou is one, Overeaters Anonymous another – but the diet industry is still talking about moderation. MODERATE? Really? If I could moderate I would not have been 100 pounds overweight. If my Skinny Girls could moderate they would not have not been on the phone crying to me that they could not stand being out of control. If they could moderate, people would not hire me out of desperation because they need my help. If they could moderate they would have.

elementalyou is an option, Overeaters Anonymous is another, but the diet industry is still talking about moderation. MODERATE? Really? If I could moderate I would not have been 100 pouds overweight. I’m not the only one who struggles with that; I hear the stores from my Skinny Girls about feeling out-of-control. If people could moderate, would there be so many obese people in the U.S.? The difference is that I’ve found the solution.

Another lie the diet industry has everyone believing is that you have to have a little bit of everything or you will feel deprived. That is the one of the most childish claims I have heard. Only with food is this position espoused. No one can have everything that they want, and if they are mature they learn to live with limitations. Some people have physical handicaps; some people can’t live in the city or neighborhood that they want; some people can’t go to the college of their choice – and some people can’t eat whatever they want.

We now know that the brain of the food addict is predisposed to respond differently to refined foods due to dopamine receptor deficiencies. Eating the refined, addictive foods stimulate the release of neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin resulting in euphoria. The problem is the euphoria is short-term and tolerance builds, which leads to more weight gain and more out-of-control behavior. If your eating is out of control, if you are always starting a diet and eventually failing, if your pants no longer fit, if you are dreading the upcoming holidays because you have nothing to wear and you know you will gain another 10 pounds, if you are bloated, sick, tired and hopeless, you now have a solution. You have the answer now it; is a matter of taking responsibility. Denial is not an option anymore.

If you have questions or want to talk about whether you may have an unhealthy physical attachment to foods like sugar and flour please fill out the elementalyou quiz and I will call you for a free 1 hour nutritional consultation and tell you about the one easy, healthy secret that will help your lose belly fat.
Sugar is Not as
Sweet as it Seems:
Candy as a Kid Can Lead to Violence as an Adult
Researchers in Britain have food a strong link between children who ate candy every day as a child and those who commit violent crime. They controlled for lifestyle, family income, parenting style and children’s level of education and sugar consumption remained a strong prediction of adult violence. The question is if this is due to something in sugar that increases
aggressive behavior or if eating too many sweets is a sign of lack of discipline in childhood that later shows up as lack of impulse control. What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Food Porn
I went to the L.A. County Fair and it was a sobering experience. Deep fried Twinkies, chocolate covered bacon – Ohh my, corn dogs, cotton candy, deep dish pizza – Ohhh my, pop corn, chili cheese fries, indian fry bread, caramel apples – Ohhh my…

The smells and the sights of the food were overwhelming. It was difficult to find a place on the 12 acres that did not
have a food stand. And it showed – people were eating everywhere. People were stuffing their faces everywhere – and they were not happy faces. There was a single mindedness of the women and men eating their sausage and pepper sandwiches and onion blossoms.

I have to say that while I was moved by the power of the sights and smells of the food it is a relief to not have to eat it. It is relief to have the choice. Yes, those foods are stimulating and compelling but I can easily say no. I have the gift of choice. And it is a gift. It is a gift to be able to appreciate that even though a Zucchini Winnie sounds great to me – I choose to not eat that. I DO NOT EAT THAT. The beauty of an abstinent eating program is that you are free from the temptation because you simply do not eat it. I do not have to consider what I will eat, or how much, or if I eat that I can just do more exercise tomorrow. I do not have to spend my money and time and then walk around sick to my stomach wishing I had not eaten that. I just do not eat that. It is as simple as someone that likes strawberries but is allergic to strawberries so they just don’t eat strawberries – it becomes that simple.

My elementalyou eating program gives me a freedom and a relief from the obsessing about food because I choose now, I am in control. I remember chowing down on platters of BBQ ribs, fries and corn on the cob smothered in butter and… and… and today I am so grateful to be free from these foods that harm my body and spirit. I went to the L.A. County Fair and when I got home I was hungry and had a nice dinner and felt light, in control and happy.

Victoria. "I'm now on Day 83 of the
elementalyou plan.

Every Skinny Girl needs a Chorus
I love the Skinny Girl group. Once a week all my local skinny girls finish up their dinner, get their kids situated with dad, jump in the car and head over to Venice for our Skinny Girl group. It is my favorite night of the week. We sit and chat about our week-- our struggles and successes and our lives in general.

The other night, one skinny girl shared how she is realizing that her daily trip to
the ice cream shop was more about the experience and the habit than it was about the ice cream. We brainstormed for some healthy ideas and suggested that she stop at a coffee shop after work every day for a cup of tea instead of the ice cream shop.

The idea works because her longing is not about the ice cream. Her cravings are long gone; she does not even really want the ice cream - she wants the experience. Expectancy is the cue that is driving her to Baskin Robbins. Chronic exposure to this stimulus-response experience has conditioned her to desire the 'experience,' not the ice cream. The ice cream is the reward that strengthens the association between the experience and the reward.

It will take some time for this association to be broken, but it will. All she needs is time and support.

We all need support, particularly women. Women who have a support group cheering them on are more successful with weight loss than those that don't.

Why? Because, as a new friend of mine aptly put, "we all need a chorus to get through this life." So true! We all need a group of people standing behind us singing and chanting that we are beautiful, wonderful and we can do it. Our chorus does not have to like our song or agree with our choice of music, they only have to sing.

Make sure that you have your chorus!

The Skinny Girls and I went to see Food, Inc. at the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles last night. It was ironic that as we walked in we discovered we had to stand in line at the concession stand to purchace tickets. As we approached the cash register we were bombarded with large, very large, boxes of freshly popped imitation buttery popcorn, and large colorfully wrapped
packages of Snicker bars, Red Vines and M&M’s. I ordered tickets for all of us and had to say no, not once but three times, to the cash register attendants offer of snacks; which have really the calorie content of several full meals, but we can call them snacks.

The opening line by Michael Pollen, author of “In Defense of Food” explains what just happened to us; “The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000 years.” This correlates nicely with the rise in obesity. In the last 50 years the obesity rate rose over 200%. Less than 10% of the population was overweight 50 years ago, today 65% of Americans are FAT.

If you think this is about willpower or self-control or evolution, think again. Obviously we are eating more, but the question is WHY WE ARE STUFFING OURSELVES SICK? Food, Inc. succinctly answers that question by explaining how our food has undergone a corporate-chemical change during the last 50 years that has rendered our population ignorant about something as basic as what they are eating – What's for dinner?

While Food, Inc. covers a multitude of issues surrounding what we are eating and what has happened to our food supply. When it comes to the obesity issue, I see the problem as a two-fold. First, the food is literally purposefully manipulated in such a way to skew our body’s signals of the basic regulatory systems such as hunger. This food actually triggers our bodies to need and crave more of it and removes our signals of satiety and fullness. The other major problem is that multinational corporations have taken over the production of food using opportunistic politics that have made possible the reality that it is cheaper to buy a hamburger than a head of broccoli.

Food, Inc., is surprising low on the doom and gloom quotient. Robert Kenner, the director of Food, Inc., Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation, and Michael Pollen are very optimistic about the future of our dinner table. Food, Inc. reminds us that every time we buy something at the grocery store we are voting. That we literally vote three times a day (as if the typical American eats only three times a day.) But, none the less, consuming food is a series of choices – local, labeled, organic, fast food, sugar, refined foods are all a series of choices. The total suffocation of the American Farm by Agri businesses which is responsible for 90% of the food product may seems overwhelming, however, Food, Inc. reminds us that we can make a difference – look at Big Tobacco, the similarities of the rise and fall are strikingly similar.

Responsible eating will shape and change corporate behavior. You have to educate yourself, for the sake of your health and the health of your children and their children. Food, Inc. website, foodincmovie.com, offers many ways for you to take action today. I am here to remind you that you can start by eliminating sugar and refined foods from your diet. I believe no dietary change has more impact on your health and toward the fall of Agri-business than will the complete removal of refined foods from your body.

Try it for a week – see how it changes your life. If you need help, remember I am here – call or email with any questions or just to chat.

Food Addiction:
IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT,
it is not about Willpower.

Do you remember those old commercials with the whole egg- “This is your brain.” Then the egg is cracked into a hot frying pan- “This is your brain on drugs.” That commercial could have said-“This is your brain on sugar.” The effect of sugar on your brain is frighteningly similar to the effect of drugs on your brain. Sugar is just another white powder-like cocaine;
in fact, current research shows that intense sweetness surpasses the cocaine reward response in the brain.

Bart Hoebel is a Professor of Psychology, in the Program of Neuroscience, at Princeton University. At the recent Obesity and Food Addiction Summit, Hoebel presented 10 years of research that was designed to test the theory that sugar can be addictive. The results were conclusive -sugar is addictive. Sugar, said Hoebel, triggers production of the brain's natural opioids. Opioids are the brain’s feel-good chemicals. "We think that is a key to the addiction process," he said. "The brain is getting addicted to its own opioids as it would to morphine or heroin. Drugs give a bigger effect, but it is essentially the same process."

When you eat sugar, a multitude of physiologic processes take place that affect your entire body, and especially your brain. Sugar and sugar products are so devoid of fiber and other nutrients that they digest rapidly, raising blood glucose. So you get a rush of energy, your brain releases dopamine and endorphins and you feel happy, calm, relaxed and self-confident. just like an addict does when they use drugs. But the quick raise in blood sugar falls quickly as well, causing rapid mood swing and leads to depression, anxiety, frustration and exhaustion, just like "coming down" from a drug induced high. This leads to another craving for another "quick pick me up," much like a "fix" for a drug user.

In the recent studies, after a few weeks of bingeing on sugar, the animals being tested showed neurochemical changes in the brain similar to what is seen with addictive drugs such as heroin. When the animals were given naloxone, a drug that block’s the brain’s opioid receptors, they showed signs of withdrawal such as teeth chattering, anxiety and changes in dopamine release similar to morphine, alcohol or nicotine withdrawal. If the animals couldn’t get sugar, they showed increased hyperactivity in response to amphetamine and were prone to drinking alcohol! Sound familiar?

Serge Ahmed is a scientist who specializes in addiction research in Bordeaux, France has found that virtually all the animals he tested preferred saccharin sweetened water over intravenous cocaine, a highly addictive drug. Interestingly, this preference for saccharin is not attributable to sugars unnatural ability to induce sweetness without calories, because the same preference was also observed with an equal concentration of sucrose (a natural sugar) sweetened water. This finding suggests that it is not the chemical makeup of the substance itself that is addictive, but rather the reaction of your body to tasting it and the subsequent neurochemical reaction that is addictive. So, all sweetened foods may be addictive, not just sugar sweetened foods!

The research also showed that sweetened water was preferred over cocaine. The animals tested were more willing to work for sweetened water than cocaine, even if they had to work harder to get it. What does it mean? Sugar or calorie-free sweetener sweetened water is more addictive than cocaine!

Ahmed and his partners speculate that the addictive potential of intense sweetness results from an inborn sensitivity to sweet tastants; in most mammals, our sweet receptors on our tongues evolved in ancestral environments poor in sugars and are thus not adapted to high concentrations of sweet taste. This means that when we eat sweet foods, which are highly available in today’s society, they act as supranormal stimuli (super stimulants), creating a super reward signal in our brains and that has the potential to override self-control mechanisms. By definition, a supernormal stimulus is more effective than naturally occurring stimuli in controlling behavior and therefore can override normal behaviors. These combined factors make sugar addiction almost unavoidable!

The DMS-5 comes out next year and food addiction will be listed as a substance abuse addiction. Finally the research is catching up to what we who have this issue already know. This is not an issue of willpower. But you are not alone and with elementalyou and the eyou diet you can beat the food industry at their game.
New Years Resolutions
Did you Lose the Weight?
See who did!
It’s my birthday! But more importantly it is 5 months since you made your new years resolution to lose weight! In honor or both occasions I am here only to remind you that time is passing and if you are still living your days worrying about your weight, what you are eating, what you are not eating, what you should be eating, what you should not be eating … it is time to stop and get skinny.

Now is the time girls! I have spoken to many of you and you were not ready. Stop waiting to start your skinny. It will work and you will lose the weight and it will be for good.

If you think www.elementalyou.com just another program, if you think it is too good to be true, if you think you can’t afford it – read what Marie and Linda have to say:

“When I first heard about the elementalyou plan on peachhead, I thought it was too good to be true. I've struggled with weight my entire life and have tried endless diets, training, and exercise. At times I was successful, but it was the only thing I could do in my life - count calories and exercise like crazy. And of course, when I no longer had the time to devote to that way of life, the weight (and more!) came rubber-banding back. I have two small kids and knew that this time I couldn't spend an hour a day at the gym and even more time trying to figure out fat to carb-to-protein ratios. The women who were on the plan said that it was really easy, but I didn't see what was so different about this program.
Within the first week on elemenatlyou I instantly knew the difference. My entire food-obsessed way of living had been freed. The guilt, the justification, the counting, the hiding, was all gone. I instantly felt better and knew that I was on my way to a healthy body. Instead of feeling guilty and ashamed and trying to undo the damage of whatever I had eaten earlier in the day, I am now able to spend time enjoying my family and fix one quick and healthy meal that we all enjoy.

Friends have asked me about the cost of the plan. While it may initially seem like a lot of money, especially in “this economy,” when you add up all of the individual time that Tiffany spends with you, the daily contact and the plan itself, it breaks down to a really affordable rate. I don't even have to pay a babysitter since Tiffany comes to my house for menu planning and individual meetings! I've definitely spent far more money on trainers and classes that were only temporary fixes, and I've already noticed a decrease in my grocery bill! I saved almost $75 on the first trip. We are now eating the food that I buy and saving money by not purchasing junk food. Tiffany's fee felt like it was an investment in myself and my family.

In Tiffany's commitment to her clients as well as her belief and true desire for her clients to be free of the chains of yo-yo dieting and food obsession, she has created an easy plan that works for normal, busy women.”
-Marie

“To say I was reluctant and scared is putting it mildly in starting Tiffany’s elementalyou program. Did I put it off, yes I did. No matter how much I wanted to lose this weight, I didn’t think it was possible. I was afraid in the beginning to make such a huge commitment. I must say that Tiffany was understanding and supportive during this process of “oh yeah, any day now.” Well gratefully the day did arrive and tomorrow it will be one 1 full week. And, I am the most surprised. To give up all the foods and drink that I relied on, initially seemed impossible. But frankly this week, shockingly to me, it is no big deal. Also, Tiffany really made the point unequivocally about accountability. I have never been accountable to anyone including myself regarding food and my wanting to eat and drink everything in sight. Even when a doctor would say, “I would be careful about this or should consider that”. Hell no! Food and wine was my coping, my dealing with the world. But we all come to a time of reckoning and here at this extremely crucial time in my life, I gratefully happened to find Tiffany and her elementalyou program and now I am a Skinny Girl.

This first week has been monumental for me. I did it, not only did I survive, but it was easy….just as Tiffany said it would be. My initial reaction to her description was…yeah…sure, sure. But, seriously as mentioned, tomorrow it will be the beginning of my second week and I can do this. I have cried, laughed, and now can hardly wait to hear Tiffany say daily…”how you doing Skinny Girl?”. Wow, that’s going to be me. That is me! As Tiffany has pointed out…that is who we are inside. So for the first time in my life and I ain’t no spring chicken…I know this is possible now: I am skinny girl!

Thank you Tiffany, for an amazing life-changing program and for your unwavering commitment and support to all the “Skinny Girls” out there.”
-Linda

The Skinny: walking the walk, talking the talk.

I spent last weekend in Pasadena at the New World Fair. I had an awesome time, meeting so many wonderful people, seekers and practitioners of all things healthy. I was invited to speak and was thrilled to talk 'the skinny' to a full house of interesting men and women. I addressed the basics of what foods are making us sick, fat and tired, and after, fielded some great questions. I also had a booth,
where I had a chance to make my case, one-on-one for the health benefits of being skinny. It was great connecting with so many of you; thank you all for coming by and saying hello! I am looking forward to sharing 'the skinny' with you and hearing from you, please write me and tell me your stories and concerns. I believe together we can walk towards skinny, get the skinny out to a wider audience, and start to make a difference in the lives of many.

The booth was busy with people asking how they can take control of their lives and get healthy. Thank you Erica for your invaluable help and a big 'WELCOME!' all of you who are joining me for the first time... read below to get a sense of what it means to be skinny, check out what the current Skinny Girls are saying - go to the testimonials page of my diet site (www.elementalyou.com/testimonials) to educate yourself about the dangers of sugar and refined foods and stay tuned for more.

Next I will have a chance to talk to children and their parents in person, about how essential it is to go sugar-free. I will be appearing at the Live H2O United by Love celebration at Belmont Shore Beach in Long Beach on June 20th.

Skinny saves (you money!)
I help women lose weight and take control of what they put in their mouths. After a potential client has poured her heart out to me, cried, laughed and told me that she is ready to get skinny and that elementalyou is perfect for her, sometimes the next thing she says is “I can’t afford it.” Money is on everyone’s mind these days. Nevermind that McDonald's stock
went up 10% this quarter (they are “lovin’ it!”)

Economic hard times push people to eat cheaper food and what could be cheaper than the fast food dollar menus. Hard times also produce stress and stress leads people to self-medicate. The drugs of choice for many, when self-medicating, are sugar, fat and refined foods. But make no mistake about it, your health is your most important asset and being overweight taxes your health and life in so many ways; naming ALL of the costs of being overweight would make this a novel - not a blog entry. But some of the costliest, and most obvious side effects of being overweight include: overweight people are more likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke.

Being overweight not only burdens your health, it is a burden on your purse. What are some of the costs of being fat? Well, aside from the fact that eating more costs more, there are many other costs associated with being fat. If you are overweight you are less likely to get hired and once hired you will get paid less. In fact, fat people tend to make less money and accumulate less wealth in their shorter lifetimes than their skinny counterparts. It chips away at your earning power and efficiency - and happiness. There's some research that suggests that overweight people are even less likely to be married and stay married.

I found this at: http://www.freemoneyfinance.com/2007/04/lose_weight_and.html
Here's how they add up the savings:

* Latte factor: $783
* Life insurance: $275
* Health insurance: $680
* Health-care costs: $151
* Employer incentives: $600

If you took these savings each year and invested them at 8%, in 20 years, you'd have almost $114,000. Do it for 30 years and it's $282,000. 40 years gets you $645,000. This makes getting skinny pocket change. Can you really afford not to take care of your health and body? I say start saving money... it is your body and you deserve skinny.
White Tea Zaps Fat!
I have been a strong advocate of white tea for years. White tea is the immature bud of green tea and is less processed, has less caffeine and has more antioxidants than green tea. It is also noticeably sweeter and lighter tasting than green tea. Now researchers in Germany, led by Marc Winnefeld, have found that white tea also has anti-obesity effects. That's right, white
tea has two major fat-busting components. First white tea reduces the formation of new fat cells, AND it also stimulates the breakdown of fat in already existing cells. The explanation is complicated, but the conclusion is spectacular. Finally here's something we can ingest that actually will make us skinny! Drink at least 3 cups a day, 8-10 is even better and watch the fat cells disappear.
SkinnyCoach Tip:
"I am worried that I will be hungry."
-Martha

"Being hungry is uncomfortable, very uncomfortable, right? Well, when was the last time you overate? Can you actually remember the last time you ate too much food? Sit and think for a moment, remember the last time you ate too many pieces of pizza or too much ice cream? Remember how you felt physically, your pants were tight, you felt sick, you might have been burping or farting. Do you remember how bad you felt that you did not stay on your diet again, that you overate again; remember wondering why you can't control what you eat or how much you eat, wondering what is wrong with you? Remember beating yourself up for having no will power? That is pretty uncomfortable. Being hungry is uncomfortable, but you are eating enough food and you will eat soon, you are not that hungry. Yes, being hungry is uncomfortable but so is overeating and being overweight. Overeating got you fat and you came to me 'cause you were tired of being fat. Being hungry is getting you to your skinny! You have tried living fat and being uncomfortable, and now you are going to learn it is ok to be uncomfortable and hungry sometime, because this discomfort is the discomfort that leads to skinny... and skinny feels great!"

Just say no?
Just don’t eat it? Don’t you have any willpower? Just say no. I have known for years that for some of us it is just not that simple. If we could say no - for god’s sake, we would have. My human fallibility revealed itself in food. It is not a simple chore to eat an entire gallon of ice cream, believe me, if I could have mustered up any willpower I would have stopped at … well, at least after
the third bowl.

Finally, some smart researchers at Caltech found out why some people just can’t stop. It turns out there is a specific area of the brain that modulates self-control, it's called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and GUESS WHAT? Some people have a more developed dorsolateral prefrontal cortex - which is responsible for a kind of executive control over all of our value-ladened decisions. In other words, some people can see a desirable, but unhealthy food and assess its value and nourishment and that will signal and drive the decision process – so even though they want it, their dlPFC says NO. For others, and that includes many, like me, whose dlPFC is not stimulated enough to override desire, making the right choice is often easier said than done; even when forsaking valued-based consequences like weight and health.

This is wonderful news for all those who have felt out of control, and even shame, and for those who, everyday - even in small ways, are compromising their health.

I advocate and practice a whole-foods-based diet for myself and my Skinny Girls. Eliminating trigger foods (that means ingesting absolutely no sugar and refined carbohydrates), has freed me and helps free people with food issues, from that crazy-making-up-and-down-yo-yo-bummer that is compulsive overeating. We are one step ahead of the curve and are not so vulnerable to the daily challenges of our deficient dlPFC. It is nice to know that the current research is legitimizing our food issues as more than the simple act of willpower.
Come Get the Skinny

Brain Candy?
Americans as a whole are focused on health, well-being and weight loss, but down the road we may be more concerned about our brain function. Did you know that women and men with chronically high blood sugar have an increased risk of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia? High blood sugar causes inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are
very bad for your brain. A study published in the December 2008 issue of the Annals of Neurology, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the American Diabetes Association concludes that abnormal regulation of blood sugar is linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.

What can you do now to insure that you will be able to read and understand this later?

Eliminate sugar, flour and all refined foods from your diet; it's a lifestyle change that will benefit your waistline and your mind. And exercise - even if it is just 10 minutes a day. Use your mind in unusual ways - try sudoku or a crossword puzzle, learn a new language - you can even brush your teeth with your other hand to give your brain a boost.
Come Hear Me Speak at the Annual New World Fair.
I was invited to speak at the Annual New World Fair which will be held Saturday and Sunday the 16th and 17th at the Pasadena Convention Center. I will be talking ‘the skinny;’ I am going to discuss how the food industry is misrepresenting the health effects of what's added to almost every processed food. I will guide you through the foods that are literally
killing us and talk about what you can do to stop these abuses by the major food conglomerates. ...and I will introduce an exciting new project I am happy to be a part of.

I will be speaking at 4 p.m. on Sunday the 17th of May. I want to see you there, and am looking forward to hanging out with all of you in person. Join me, get the latest on ‘the skinny,’ take a stand and support the skinny movement.

The SugarFree! Initiative
I am so excited to be involved in an awesome new project that's designed to empower individuals and communities to eliminate sugar and overcome the resulting negative health-effects of sugar and refined carbohydrates. The SugarFree! Initiative is a grass-roots coalition of experts and lay-people who address and promote the personal and social benefits of going
sugar-free. We will provide information and resources on issues such as how to make your neighborhood-school sugar-free and the effects of refined foods on our bodies, minds and health. I will bring you more information and details on this amazing new health-promoting coalition as it becomes available. Stay tuned!

Elemental Earth
Let’s celebrate planet EARTH by getting skinny. Losing weight is not only good for your health it is good for the Earth. In a study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, researchers estimate that a “lean” population will consume almost 20% less food and produce fewer greenhouse gases than the current “obese” population.

There are many
reasons that a fat carbon footprint is heavier than a skinny stiletto. For starters, it simply takes less energy to transport a thin person -did you know that obese people may now have to pay more money to fly on airplanes? The other reason is only too obvious. Fat people eat more food; more food to be produced, transported and more trash to be thrown away. I wonder if an obesity tax is on the horizon, like the smokers tax that began several decades ago, when they realized smoking was not only a personal health issue but also a public health issue.

What can you do for Mother Earth today? Eat elemental - less processed foods, eliminate HFCS, drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water or soda, and walk or bike whenever possible. And remember you will produce one ton LESS of carbon dioxide emissions each year by being skinny.
Obesity and Food Addiction Summit
For those of you in the northwest, there's an interesting conference on food and addiction that I will be attending. It's the Obesity and Food Addiction Summit, www.foodaddictionsummit.org/index.htm. Many interesting topics will be addressed. Among the many distinguished scientists are two I am looking forward to seeing: Dr. Serge Ahmed and Dr Bart Hoebel will both discuss their current research that compares sugar’s addictive qualities to that of cocaine and other addictive substances. and Jack LaLanne will be there accepting a lifetime achievement Award.

I am also looking forward to hearing form Yvonne Sanders-Butler, who as the principal of an elementary school, banned all refined foods from the cafeteria and saw a significant drop in absenteeism, increase in attention, energy and grades. This should be an amazing weekend.
This Family is Slashing their Carbon Footprint.
Becky and Wayne are certainly doing their part to slash their family carbon footprint. Becky used to drink several sodas a day and says she felt she also had to “buy something” for the kids when she went through the drive-thru. This can add up to a lot of trash for a family of five. Since she and her husband started eating sensibly - they are on month three of elementalyou, they are looking great, thinner, stronger, healthier and sexier. Becky has lost over 21 pounds and Wayne has lost 31 pounds! Can you imagine? And no more drive-thru’s for this family – only elemental, healthy, unprocessed, Earth-friendly foods.

Ban High Fructose Corn Syrup
Read about the dangers of this common ingredient and sign our petition:

Recently, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has been the subject of much debate and has been demonized, as more research uncovers the ill effects it has on our health. The sugar industry's response to this increased awareness has been to mount a sophisticated media
campaign in defense of HFCS, which includes television commercials, viral videos and even twittering. The industry's main portal to their campaign is www.sweetsurprise.com and it is chock-full of distortions, misrepresentations and outright lies. The big debate: “Is HFCS really worse for you than sugar?” The answer is, “of course it is.” To say that I don't advocate sugar is not a small understatement; in fact, I think both sugar and HFCS are downright dangerous for your health especially in the quantities consumed in our modern diet.

Webster's dictionary defines the word “refined” as “purified.” A more adequate description when referring to sugar and HFCS would be: “concentrate, bleach, process at high temperatures, concentrate, strip of all nutrients, concentrate further and call it food!” Calling sugar and HFCS “refined” as in “purified” is ludicrous! But let me play devil's advocate for a moment and tell you why sugar is definitely the lesser of the two evils.

What it all boils down to: HFCS is metabolized by your body in a completely different way than sugar. HFCS is 55% fructose and 45% glucose, while regular sugar (sucrose) is 50% each glucose and fructose. Seems like they are pretty much the same right? Wrong! The fructose in HFCS is not from a fruit, it’s highly refined, man-made fructose. It is a starch and it doesn’t exist in nature. It is chemically refined into an artificial hydrocarbon, and your body does not even recognize it as food! Sucrose is recognized by the body, and processed differently.

When you eat sugar, your body converts it into glucose, which raises your blood glucose levels, stimulating insulin production, which turns glucose into energy by moving it out of your blood and into your cells. Eating sugar also causes your body to produce leptin, a hormone that turns down appetite and increases your metabolic rate. When you eat HFCS, your body does not stimulate the production of either insulin or leptin. The fructose in HFCS goes directly to your liver, where it is way more likely than sucrose to be metabolized into fat, which raises triglyceride levels. Also, HFCS has been shown to suppress gherin, a hormone that signals satiety (satisfaction and fullness). The result of ingesting HFCS is that you are left exhausted and still hungry, so you eat more!

Food manufacturers use HFCS because it is sweeter (and therefore more addictive), cheaper to produce, and has a longer shelf life than sugar. This means they can increase portion size without increasing cost; and they can also make their products sweeter. This increased sweetness, the effect on blood sugar and the way it is metabolized all lead to more cravings and more fat on your thighs!

The commercials touting HFCS as “natural, same as sugar and fine in moderation” are really well-crafted propaganda. They are weapons being used against the uninformed in the hopes of extending the 'shelf-life' of HFCS. Fortunately, the people are discovering to what extent HFCS is not natural, and that it is not the “same as sugar.”

HFCS is extremely difficult to moderate because it is in almost everything!! If you eat the average American diet, than you probably eat condiments (catsup, salad dressing, bbq sauce), bread, cookies, crackers, pizza, pasta sauce, jam and jelly, (yes, it's even in jam and jelly!) soups, sodas and frozen foods. These all contain HFCS. Even though you may only drink one soda per day, you are consuming inordinate amounts of HFCS in everything else. The USDA reports that about one-quarter of the calories consumed by the average American is in the form of added sugar, most of which is HFCS. And incredibly, this figure doesn’t even include concentrated fruit juice, sugar alcohol, polyol sweeteners or corn based chemically refined sweetener components like maltodextrin or modified corn starch.

And if you can believe that, realize you’re your children’s food is loaded with HFCS: fruit snacks, candy bars, breakfast cereal, hot cocoa, pop-tarts, chips and fruit drinks all have HFCS. Even “healthy” foods like granola bars, flavored oatmeal, trail mixes and some juices have HFCS. Shockingly, some baby formulas now contain HFCS too!

HFCS is harmful and should be eliminated from your diet and your children’s diet. You can’t wait for the powers that be to clean up our food supply, please start now by doing the following:

- Start checking the labels of all the food that you buy. If it has HFCS, don’t buy it!

- Educate yourself about HFCS – you will be surprised just how bad it is.
AND PLEASE

- Sign our petition to ban HFCS at www.skinnycoach.com/petition

It's Shocking!
I had the chance to see some amazing people with radically different ideas and perspectives at the New Life Expo in New York. But, Connie Bennett, the author of “Sugar Shock,” was by far the highlight of the show. I consider her book to be my sugar bible. It is a concise and direct breakdown of the effects of sugar and refined foods on our health, mind-frame
and cultural experience. While there are many wonderful books on the topic, like “Sugar Blues,” “Get the Sugar Out,” “Lick the Sugar Habit,” “Sugar Busters,” “Potatoes not Prozac,” Dr. Gott’s “No Flour, No Sugar Diet,” it is Connie Bennett that has taken all the research and systematically analyzed the physical and psychological effects of sugar. She looks at the physiologic and chemical explanations – all the while citing the relevant studies. She does not make claims without supporting them with data, and data she has lots of. Bennett also, gives ample personal and anecdotal examples that illustrate the issue directly and that inspire many “ah-ha experiences” - realizations that will lead you to the fundamental conclusion that these commonly accepted foods are literally destroying your body, mood, and health.

Because Connie Bennett is an unabashed truth-teller she does not hesitate to document the systematic abuses by the food conglomerates. She literally proves that the FDA and USDA, have allowed agribusiness to poison and defile our national food supply and that they continue to do so in spite of the overwhelming evidence that they are causing a major health epidemic. Diabetes is chump change; we are talking about a major obesity pandemic and even more importantly, malnutrition. She also includes useful tips and ideas on how to make a change in your diet.

She has a whopping 30-page bibliography of the studies referenced throughout her writing. In order to compile this amazing book, a book I would almost call a textbook, she personally interviewed over 300 medical experts. She reviewed hundreds of medical studies most of which were published in peer-reviewed medical journals, she conducted research with her target audience to learn about the needs and interests of “sugar addicts” to narrow down what they needed to help them conquer their addiction, and of course, she studied the books already published on the topic. No wonder “Sugar Shock” is so complete.

I have referenced “Sugar Shock” many times, and while writing this article I came across the section of her book that equates sugar to a drug- an addiction, a dependency. She lays out a compelling argument with a thorough physiological explanation. And now, years later, the current research has backed her up, unqualifiedly. Researchers at Princeton University studying bingeing and dependency in rats have found that when the animals ingest large amounts of sugar, their brains undergo changes similar to the changes in the brains of people who abuse drugs like cocaine and heroin.

“Our evidence from an animal model suggests that bingeing on sugar can act in the brain in ways very similar to drugs of abuse,” says lead researcher and Princeton psychology professor Bart Hoebel. Sugar can be just as habit-forming as cocaine.

Who knew?

Connie Bennett knew and she has been talking about it long before the media has.

Connie is putting together a new book – which I cannot wait to read, but in the meantime she mentioned that she might be coming to LA for a rare in-person appearance, stay tuned because this will be something that no skinny girl will want to miss.

This weekend, some of the most powerful advocates for health and food reform are speaking at the Long Beach Convention Center and I can’t wait to participate. Congresswoman Diane Watson will be speaking about her work in Washington and fighting the good fight for consumer
protection. Finally, we are seeing major figures coming out publicly against the food establishment and calling them on how they are poisoning our food supply.

I am looking forward to meeting these advocates and finding out how my Skinny Girls and I can take a stand and make a difference. I will let you all know what I find out - and how we can contribute to the grassroots movement to make positive changes to the diet of the American people.
To the Core.
My Skinny Girls and I are taking a Pilates class at Archers Pilates and Wellness in Culver City. We are meeting once a week and treating ourselves to an hour of awesome focused movement, which on top of being graceful and delicate has turned out to be surprisingly ...difficult. During the class the workout seems, ohh-so easy. But
the next day, I am definitely feeling the effects. My ‘core’ muscles are strengthening and my whole body is being challenged. Pilates is a great blend of stretching and strengthening, it is no wonder it is the exercise of ballet dancers. I love working together with my Skinny Girls to enhance the benefits of eyou. It is great fun to work together, to laugh and bond while we build our muscles and strengthen out bodies, we may all come from different places but this class is getting us at the core!

I Love NY!
Hello World, it's me, Tiffany, the L.A. Skinny Coach, in New York City to celebrate the launch of my new site, Skinny Coach.com. What better place to than New York City for new beginnings and pure joy! I am here 'on business' to spread the word about the skinny life - you can get a sense of what I mean by "Skinny" in the column to your left, "Reclaiming
Skinny" - and the benefits of being free from the foods that make you fat, tired and sick. The minute I landed, I got a jolt of that New York energy. The focused hustle and bustle, the 'get real attitude,' and the sense of everything is possible. I get a high from the rhythm of this city; each street has it's own 'national identity,' and yet somehow thriving together, forming this mosaic of soul. Everyone has a story... the story that lead me here started over 12 years ago when I lost 100 pounds. After years of struggling with compulsive over eating and yo-yo dieting, I finally realized the answer to my weight issues was in the food I was eating, not my psyche. I wrote a book, elementalyou, and developed a whole-foods-based diet, the eyou diet, that actually really works. The eyou diet 'stops the cravings;' it works on a metabolic level and is successful because it is based on the principle that sugar and refined foods are unhealthy and should not be ingested- by anyone, but for some eating these foods will guarantee they will struggle unnecessarily with uncontrollable cravings and systematic weight gain.
I live in Venice Beach California and while the smiles come easy in L.A. it's not easy to connect with people on the street. Not true here in New York. It's the people of New York though that give me the biggest thrill: from the taxi driver to the guy at the corner-hot-dog stand, they all have an opinion and are open to hearing mine. That's me in the picture getting a
big HUG from Joe, who insisted that not only were his pretzel a good buy, they were good for me! (he does not know who he is talking to!)
I am in New York for the New Life Expo - to talk about my practice, to meet health practitioners from all walks, and all disciplines, and to learn - because I find myself constantly surprised by people's different approaches and paths. The New Life Expo is the place where the mind meets the body, meets the spirt . You can run into the masters of SuperBrain Yoga, which I do with my kids, to experts in anti-aging technology and products. It is fascinating and fun.
They say that knowledge is power and this is the place to feel the power. I am excited about being in New York where the city itself wears its hard won knowledge on its sleeve. It's the knowledge based on life experience and here, while everyone's seen it all, street smarts isn't synonymous with smarty pants.
I am especially excited to meet Connie Bennett,
C.N.C.C., the Sugar Liberator and author of the book "Sugar Shock." I have read many, many books on the subject and find her work to be amazingly clear and thorough. I've been through my own journey of discovery on the effects of refined foods on my health and body and have to say that Connie is able to document the research clearly and undeniably. All in a straightforward and concise manner. She brings to the table an amazing amount of current information on the latest research. She is speaking at the Expo, on how to "Break free of Your Sugar Addiction to Lose Weight and Get Energy." I can't wait to see her and hear what she has to say. I will report my new discoveries as I go. Yay! I love New York!
