5 Simple Foods to add to your diet that WILL improve you!
Everyday we discuss what we want to eliminate from our diets. Don't eat this food if you want to lose weight, don't eat that food if you want more energy, or quit eating that other food if you want to lower your cholesterol. Lets talk about good foods that can help you lose weight, bring you tons of energy and help improve blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol.

5 Simple Foods to add to your diet that WILL improve you!

*Coconut Milk: Better for you then soy, almond or dairy milk by far, this miracle juice helps you lose weight and contributes to a healthy body. This rich source of manganese helps maintain blood sugar places and also relaxes muscles and nerves, it also will keep skin elastic due to large amounts of copper. Phosphorus and iron rich, it builds strong bones and helps prevent anemia. This is hard to believe but 1 cup supplies a quarter of your daily value of iron. Coconut milk will even help you lose weight because it's super high in fiber making you feel full very quickly. As if this all is not enough; it will also help decrease joint inflammation, lower blood pressure, contribute to a healthy immune system, and finally promotes a healthy prostate. *Yogurt:
In multiple studies done over the last decade results have found that eating 1 cup of NONFAT PLAIN yogurt twice a day will help you lose over 80% more belly fat than those eating the same amount of calories but without the yogurt. They tried the same studies with milk, it didn't work, even with milk and probiotics it still didn't work. Bottom line, we don't know why it works but I'm talking about the only spot weight loss treatment that has ever been proven to work!

But what most people don't know is that if you are not eating "WILD CAUGHT ALASKAN" salmon, you might as well be ingesting poison. Most salmon at the store or in your local restaurant is farmed and pumped with red dye to make it look more appealing- this type of fish is associated with numerous environmental concerns, including water pollution, chemical use, parasites and disease. The contaminates are dangerous so it's better to eat no salmon at all then to eat dirty farmed salmon.

When your Dr. is WRONG
Help I have high triglycerides AND my blood sugars are high. My friend called me yesterday and told me his doctor has informed him the news and then his doctor said exercise more.
ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME.

How long are doctors keep going to say exercise if they are fat or sick. Exercise has a LIMITED effect on weight loss and also a limited effect on blood sugars*.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE FOOD


When you eat flour or sugar you body produces the hormone insulin. Insulin is converted in the liver into glycogen, glycogen is used to feed the brain and muscles.

Excess glycogen is converted in the liver into triglycerides. The triglycerides do one of two things
1. The remain in your blood stream THUS high triglycerides. By the way the problem with high triglycerides is it thickens your blood increasing the chance of heart attack and stroke.

2. The excess insulin - glycogen -triglycerides are stored as belly fat. When you have excess glycogen it is converted into triglycerides and stored in the belly. To add insult to injury excess insulin sends a hormonal message to NOT RELEASE stored fat.

Excess insulin/glycogen also causes hunger. Because a rise in insulin results in lower blood sugar at first and this results in hunger - usually less than a couple of hours after you eat and usually in the form of a craving for sweets - of course, starting the process once again.

What can you do? Well once you have high triglycerides you can eat more oatmeal, and flax and walnuts. You can take fish oil. You can exercise. But nothing is going to have a more dramatic effect than to reduce or eliminate flour and sugar from your diet.

Food Porn - Orange County Style
County Fairs have been around as long as counties have been around. The excitement of the sights, the events, the rides... is palatable. But what is it that we really go for, I mean really? THE FOOD of course. Everywhere I looked I saw food, food glorious food. Of course, as I looked longer I began to realize that it was not so glorious. Fair food has been bastardized into the macabre representation of American.


Only in America where the obesity rate is 67%, only in America where OUR cheese (American cheese) is actually not cheese but a food-like substance, only in America where we cut our stomachs out rather than shut our mouths would there be chocolate covered bacon, maple bacon donuts, glazed donut bacon cheeseburgers, chicken fried bacon, and, of course, deep fried twinkies, deep fried mac-n-cheese, deep fried Kool Aid (yes), deep fried dough, deep fried avocado, deep fried brownies, deep fried Klondike bars, deep fried candy bars and the beloved deep fried butter.


And boy ohh boy we love our food. Or do we? I saw children, men and women all over the fair fixated on the chili cheese fries - salivating while in line and before the last bite of their BBQ pig sandwich is stuffed in their mouths, their eyes wandering to the Indian Fry Bread. The people did not seem happy, they seemed to be in a coma-like trance as they opened their mouths and carried their huge bellies around the food stands, one after another. No, they did not seem to like what they were doing.



It occurred to me how lucky I am when one of my friends looked at me with sympathy as she swallowed a deep fried corn dog "I'm sorry you can't eat." I am lucky that while I used to love a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, I can choose no. I can choose no to cotton candy and deep dish pizza and caramel apples. I can choose no to a fat stomach, heart disease and size 22 shorts. I can enjoy the rides, I can dance to the music, I can wear a sexy little summer dress and light heels and I can enjoy the people around me. I am LUCKY to be free from the food that is killing my friends, my neighbors and more than 2/3's of Americans.

Sabotage, my husband said I can't do it?
It is human nature to have hope. We all have more trust and belief in ourselves than we think we have. Once inspired you can do anything and you know it. But we do not live in an emotional vacuum. We are communicative beings and what the people around us say, don't say - do and don't do effect us and our feelings of power and self worth.

AND YOU DONT KNOW IT IS HAPPENING because you give yourself up one molecule at a time.

Before you know it you are believing your husband when he says that you have failed every other diet so this one won't work. Even when you know at every level of you being that this will work, that you found your answer, that you are ready - you believe him because.... "he knows me."

Yes, all the diets in the past failed. That is true for everything you did not conquer on the first try. You failed riding a bike until you did not fail anymore. You failed at swimming until you did not anymore. EVERYONE of my Skinny Girls FAILED on every diet they had ever been on UNTIL the eyou diet, including me.

Just like we all have to become aware of how to swim and once we do we never forget - we all can succeed at having a thin and healthy body - that is our natural self, you just need to become aware of how and once you do you will be skinny forever.

Strengthen your willpower: How to
It is very psychically damaging and debilitating to tell yourself that you are going to eat better today, and then don't, to tell yourself that you are not going to have a second piece of chocolate and then have it… it is a day after day, meal after meal, onslaught of disappointment, failure and lack of trust. This can have a profound effect on how you feel about yourself and your power over the world and it will permeate everything that you do.


Self control and self discipline is a muscle and when worked and used becomes stronger and more efficient. Each time that you garner control over an impulse that impulse not only lessens but your ability to control other impulses gets more attune and efficient.

I will give you a personal example, when my client, Samantha calls me and tells me that it is was so difficult for her to drive past Starbucks because she is so used to having a Frappuccino everyday after work and she is proud of herself. I tell her , "Listen Samantha, that is great that you drove past Starbucks but I want you to know that you did not succeed just this time, by doing that today next time will be easier too! And before you know it the association of driving past Starbucks and not stopping will be more prevalent than stopping. You will no longer need to use self control because it won't occur to you anymore – you have a new association. Additionally, each time you say no, every single time, you are strengthening your will "muscle" you are telling your self in a very conscious and unconscious way that you are not a liar, that you do what you say and that you have the ability to choose."

I have a friend who has lost 50 pounds and has about 20 pounds to lose and he SMOKES too. I feel a strong need to encourage him to quit smoking, he is almost 50 years old and has been smoking his whole life, but because he is doing so well with his weight loss I think it is probably better to let him strengthen his will power muscle, gain control over the eating and then when he is ready to quit smoking he will know he can do – he has control, he chooses his behavior, it is his choose and he can make that decision and do it.

So go out and exercise your willpower muscle – every time you say no, every time you clean the house instead of put it off, each time you resist the urge to honk your horn and every time you put down that donut you are getting stronger and better.

Thin, fit people make more money, we have known that for decades. A recent study in the Journal of Applied Psychology demonstrated that weight has a significant impact on a woman's pay - the fatter you are the less money you make. In fact, skinny women make on average $22,000 more dollars per year than average-weight woman.

research is also very clear, skinny women are healthier and live much longer lives than average-weight women. While it might not "be fair" and it might be discriminatory, it is certainly based on an assessment of what is healthy and not on an unrealistic or sick perversion of the female form.

I find this study particularly fascinating because I talk to women all the time that are desperate to lose weight, desperate to get skinny, know that the eyou diet will work and say they can't afford it - they do not make enough money.

Maybe next time someone says that, instead of saying, "well, call when you are ready" or "you know losing weight will take years off your life" or "but you said you did not want to have sex with your husband because of your weight gain" or "but you said that you go to bed miserable every night and wake up and have nothing to wear," or "but you were just told by your dr. that if you lost weight you would not have diabetes anymore" instead of all that, next time I hear "it costs too much" I will simply say that being fat can cost them $22,000 dollars a year!

Weight Loss Confidential:
Not all calories are created equal
For every 100 calories of carbohydrate you consume your body expends 5 to 10 calories in digestion, for fat calories even less. However, for every 100 calories of protein you consume, you body needs 20 to 30 calories to digest it.

AND it's even more complicated.... Just because you eat these calories does not insure that they are being digested.

Normally as the calories go through your tummy and reach your small intestine most of the nutrients are absorbed. Fat is digested fairly well. Protein and all animal sources are also fairly digestible. Plant sources are the least digestible. What does that mean? complex carbs like vegetables and whole grains block the absorption of calories, including other calories! In fact, a very high fiber diet, like the eyou diet, can block up to 20% of the calories you consume. A research article in the Journal of Nutrition found that a high fiber diet leaves up to twice as many calories undigested as a low fiber diet.

WHAT TO DO?
If you want to lose weight, this is the hot tip: eat protein at every meal and consume at least 40 grams of fiber a day.

It took years for me to figure out why my skinny girls who eat so much food - lose so much weight so quickly. We know the answer now. Donna lost 21 pounds her first month and is still on the eyou diet over a year later! Go Skinny Go.

Skinny saves (you money!)
I help women lose weight and take control of what they put in their mouths. After a potential client has poured her heart out to me, cried, laughed and told me that she is ready to get skinny and that elementalyou is perfect for her, sometimes the next thing she says is “I can’t afford it.” Money is on everyone’s mind these days. Nevermind that McDonald's stock
went up 10% this quarter (they are “lovin’ it!”)

Economic hard times push people to eat cheaper food and what could be cheaper than the fast food dollar menus. Hard times also produce stress and stress leads people to self-medicate. The drugs of choice for many, when self-medicating, are sugar, fat and refined foods. But make no mistake about it, your health is your most important asset and being overweight taxes your health and life in so many ways; naming ALL of the costs of being overweight would make this a novel - not a blog entry. But some of the costliest, and most obvious side effects of being overweight include: overweight people are more likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke.

Being overweight not only burdens your health, it is a burden on your purse. What are some of the costs of being fat? Well, aside from the fact that eating more costs more, there are many other costs associated with being fat. If you are overweight you are less likely to get hired and once hired you will get paid less. In fact, fat people tend to make less money and accumulate less wealth in their shorter lifetimes than their skinny counterparts. It chips away at your earning power and efficiency - and happiness. There's some research that suggests that overweight people are even less likely to be married and stay married.

Here's how they add up the savings:

* Latte factor: $783
* Life insurance: $275
* Health insurance: $680
* Health-care costs: $151
* Employer incentives: $600

If you took these savings each year and invested them at 8%, in 20 years, you'd have almost $114,000. Do it for 30 years and it's $282,000. 40 years gets you $645,000. This makes getting skinny pocket change. Can you really afford not to take care of your health and body? I say start saving money... it is your body and you deserve skinny.

Should McDonald's advertising be forbidden?

WIf you are still thinking that obesity is about willpower or emotional weakness and psychological problems then here is yet more evidence proving that food is addictive, especially food that is high in sugar.

Women that report compulsive eating habits have physiological responses in the brain exactly like drug addicts. Using MRI's, is has been demonstrated that seeing a milkshake triggers brain activity in the anterior cingulate cortex and the medial orbito-frontal cortex of the brain. Both of these areas are implicated in drug addicts urge to use drugs like cocaine. This means that compulsive over eating is driven by an overly excitable or enhanced anticipation of the rewarding properties of food.

Some people, namely people addicted to food, will react with physical, psychological and behavioral changes when exposed to the food. This, of course, directly implicates advertising in the obesity problem. Do you remember when they stopped allowing cigarette and alcohol commercials? They did so for the same reason.

Bottom line, if you find that you can't stop eating bread, pasta or pastries after you start, of if you see a commercial for ice cream and have to have it, you have issues more than willpower and you probably need help to overcome these issues and lose the weight. You will never be able to moderate your intake just like a drug addict can not moderate her heroin use.

All calories are not created equal

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has reported for the first time that whole grain intake reduces belly fat (measured either as waist circumference or intra-abdominal, visceral fat by CT scan.) AND importantly, refined grain intake actually increases belly fat.

For years people have said a calorie is a calorie. Intuitively we all knew this could not be true. The research is finally justifying the simple truth that it is not that simple. Different foods have different effects on our bodies and are processed more efficiently.

We know that eating whole foods have a plethora of health benefits. Brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa all have been documented to lower risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, lower blood pressure, and on and on. However, it has never been academically documented that it actually decreases belly fat. YES my friends it is a spot reducer.

Refined foods, like sugar and flour, have been "refined" OF fiber, vitamins and minerals and other important plant compounds. These empty carb, these refined carbs, cause our blood sugar to spike and this spike causes a flood of problems throughout our body that it then has to deal with, including sever carbohydrate cravings.

Now we know that by eating whole carbs, by eliminating sugar and flour, we can lose 10% more weight in our belly than those who continue to eat bread, pasta and cookies. That is a pretty big effect if you have a belly and can't seem to lose that last 10 pounds or if you have 100 pounds to lose and you want to do it FAST but healthy.

Do you remember those old commercials with the whole egg- “This is your brain.” Then the egg is cracked into a hot frying pan- “This is your brain on drugs.” That commercial could have said-“This is your brain on sugar.” The effect of sugar on your brain is frighteningly similar to the effect of drugs on your brain. Sugar is just another white powder- like cocaine; in fact, current research shows that intense sweetness surpasses the cocaine reward response in the brain.

Bart Hoebel is a Professor of Psychology, in the Program of Neuroscience, at Princeton University. At the recent Obesity and Food Addiction Summit, Hoebel presented 10 years of research that was designed to test the theory that sugar can be addictive. The results were conclusive -sugar is addictive. Sugar, said Hoebel, triggers production of the brain's natural opioids. Opioids are the brain’s feel-good chemicals. "We think that is a key to the addiction process," he said. "The brain is getting addicted to its own opioids as it would to morphine or heroin. Drugs give a bigger effect, but it is essentially the same process."

When you eat sugar, a multitude of physiologic processes take place that affect your entire body, and especially your brain. Sugar and sugar products are so devoid of fiber and other nutrients that they digest rapidly, raising blood glucose. So you get a rush of energy, your brain releases dopamine and endorphins and you feel happy, calm, relaxed and self-confident. just like an addict does when they use drugs. But the quick raise in blood sugar falls quickly as well, causing rapid mood swing and leads to depression, anxiety, frustration and exhaustion, just like "coming down" from a drug induced high. This leads to another craving for another "quick pick me up," much like a "fix" for a drug user.

In the recent studies, after a few weeks of bingeing on sugar, the animals being tested showed neurochemical changes in the brain similar to what is seen with addictive drugs such as heroin. When the animals were given naloxone, a drug that block’s the brain’s opioid receptors, they showed signs of withdrawal such as teeth chattering, anxiety and changes in dopamine release similar to morphine, alcohol or nicotine withdrawal. If the animals couldn’t get sugar, they showed increased hyperactivity in response to amphetamine and were prone to drinking alcohol! Sound familiar?

Serge Ahmed is a scientist who specializes in addiction research in Bordeaux, France has found that virtually all the animals he tested preferred saccharin sweetened water over intravenous cocaine, a highly addictive drug. Interestingly, this preference for saccharin is not attributable to sugars unnatural ability to induce sweetness without calories, because the same preference was also observed with an equal concentration of sucrose (a natural sugar) sweetened water. This finding suggests that it is not the chemical makeup of the substance itself that is addictive, but rather the reaction of your body to tasting it and the subsequent neurochemical reaction that is addictive. So, all sweetened foods may be addictive, not just sugar sweetened foods!

The research also showed that sweetened water was preferred over cocaine. The animals tested were more willing to work for sweetened water than cocaine, even if they had to work harder to get it. What does it mean? Sugar or calorie-free sweetener sweetened water is more addictive than cocaine!

Ahmed and his partners speculate that the addictive potential of intense sweetness results from an inborn sensitivity to sweet tastants; in most mammals, our sweet receptors on our tongues evolved in ancestral environments poor in sugars and are thus not adapted to high concentrations of sweet taste. This means that when we eat sweet foods, which are highly available in today’s society, they act as supranormal stimuli (super stimulants), creating a super reward signal in our brains and that has the potential to override self-control mechanisms. By definition, a supernormal stimulus is more effective than naturally occurring stimuli in controlling behavior and therefore can override normal behaviors. These combined factors make sugar addiction almost unavoidable!

The DMS-5 comes out next year and food addiction will be listed as a substance abuse addiction. Finally the research is catching up to what we who have this issue already know. This is not an issue of willpower. But you are not alone and with the right help and the right diet you can beat the food industry at their game.

Overeating is Not an Emotional Issue
Obesity being a sign of self hate is a popular notion in the pop psychology field. Geneen Roth goes as far as saying "the issue is really not about the food" its about your disconnection with God. Oprah sang the praises over a year ago, saying she finally found the answer - yet she is still obese - which is killing her fast.


I am not surprised that people capitalize on the inherent insecurities involved with weight and women and blame the woman, some how it is her fault, she is weak, disconnected, emotionally struggling.

But, obesity is not an emotional issue. It just simply is not.

For years, alcoholism was thought also to be emotional issue. We now know conclusively that it is not. It is a bio chemical and bio neurobiological issue AND has a strong heredity component - both of which are more strongly associated with a person becoming an alcoholic than is their environment, childhood abuse or trauma or personality.

Obesity is also a bio chemical and bio neurological issue. Yes, a few pounds here or there might be to comfort yourself during a break up or in the winter or when you are sad. NOT 30 pounds over years of struggling and dieting. Food, in particular sugar and flour, release a series of strongly pleasing neurochemicals in your brain. This process is addictive and is progressive and it is driven by the same neurobiological mechanism in the brain as drug addiction.

Over-consumption of refined foods (sugar and flour and anything with sugar and flour) triggers addictive neuroadaptive responses in the brain reward circuitries. Specifically, dopamine which is a neruotransmitter that is released by pleasurable experiences like sex. When we eat refined carbs there is a significant decrease in dopamine receptors which means dopamine is in the system longer and results in an incredibly pleasurable experience. Refined foods, like cocaine also damage the receptors so that pleasure is more difficult to achieve without the drug of choice.

Additionally, starting the very next day after an incidence of refined food overeating, which is the equivalent of some pizza and soda, the brain is changed in a way that is consistent with a person that is overeating for several weeks. Which means that that refined food overeating is habitual in the same manner and through the same mechanism as drugs.

While being fat is emotional and you might eat to cover up, hide the pain, check out - it only works to do those things because it is a drug that makes you feel better.

If you find that you can not control what you put in your mouth. If you find that you are spending too much time and thought on food, do you feel hopeless about your relationship with food, do you feel like you are not yourself - like you don't recognize the person in the mirror? Do you eat when your not hungry? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Then you probably are having some degree of addictive reaction to certain foods. Just like with all addictive substances the only known answer is abstinence. You will have to learn to not eat refined foods - not a little, not in moderation, not on special occasions. Moderation does not work when you are dealing with a neurobiological addiction.

3 Things You Must Do to Lose the Belly Fat

What is going on with that growing stomach? Why? all of a sudden, do you have a tummy and can’t lose it? Unfortunately, mother nature is wildly against us as we age. Several things happen to make a bigger waist almost inevitable.

First, as we age, estrogen levels decrease and as estrogen drops the weight goes to your belly instead of your hips. On top of that belly fat is very chemically active. It is constantly releasing fatty acids which in turn create high insulin levels in your blood. Insulin's job it is to remove glucose from your blood for energy use. So to add insult to injury, when insulin is overproduced what is not removed is stored as ABDOMONAL FAT. And on top of that, when insulin levels are high, your appetite increases and makes you crave refined carbs which in turn makes you feel hungrier.

But there is more bad news, as we age we lose fat burning muscle, at a rate of ½ pound of muscle a year, which of course means you gain fat –at a rate of 1/3 of a pound a year of just fat.

What else?
As your hormones decrease with age the lining of the intestines become much more sensitive leaving sugar to ferment longer in the digestive track which drastically increases your sensitivity to carbohydrates.

If you continue to eat the way you always have you are guaranteed to have a larger waist circumference and a fatter belly. The ONLY way to counter act your growing waist is to keep the insulin level low and the blood sugar balanced.

What can you do?
Glucagon is the hormone that balances insulin and glucagon is stimulated by protein. Glucagon literally pulls the fat out of the cells and once glucagon is high it remains in your system for around 4 hours, which means you are burning fat and you are NOT HUNGRY.

This means you need to have protein at every meal, never eat any carbohydrate alone and completely remove all added sugar and flour from your diet. No pizza, no bread, no pasta, no agava or honey or sugar and you will keep a small waist, flat belly and slim body.

Can'’t live without those foods? Then you will not ever have that flat belly you used to have. And frankly, you have had enough pizza and cupcakes. You have had over 35 years of it. If you want your body back this is the only solution.

Smoking vs. Fat Belly? Which is worse for your health? Would you believe smoking is a healthier alternative to being fat? Well it is, and by a long shot. When compared to smoking, heavy drinking and poverty, being overweight cost significantly more money and causes many more chronic health conditions.

Obese people (by the way that is 5’3 and over 168 pounds or 5’6” and over 185 lbs) spend more on both medical services and medication than daily smokers or heavy drinkers and they also have a much higher increase in chronic conditions. If you are wondering if you should lose weight, remember that you are killing yourself more effectively with that 30 pounds than if you smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.
